In December of 1935, when George was 17 years old, he joined the navy and left home. He was discharged from the service in January of 1941. However, we rejoined in December 1941 due to the start of World War II.

He was in the hospital several times during his service. During one of his hospital stays he met a nurse named Beth Durfey. George and Beth married in 1943 in San Gabriel, California. They had six children -- Barrie Von, Rick Martin, George Oakley, Sue Ann, Rebecca Lynn, and Lan Dell.

The family lived in Garden Grove, California from 1943 to 1974. Then in May 1974 when George was 56, the family (George, Beth and their youngest son Lan) moved to 629 acres of land in Oregon. The Oregon dream house, called the Smith Ranch, was part of the family for over 20 years. Beth and George's children and grandchildren enjoyed many fun filled reunions at the Ranch.
